Empire, the Slave Trade, and Britain’s Wealth: A Reply to Will Hutton in The Guardian
Will Hutton, the prominent commentator, taking issue with Kemi Badenoch, has asserted that the empire and slavery were crucial to the Industrial Revolution and to Britain’s growing wealth since the eighteenth century. But all the evidence, sifted by academic historians over the past fifty years, undermines this common assumption. Imperial slavery made a small contribution to British wealth, and the empire was, if anything, a net burden on the nation.
